What is SAP?

SAP (Systems Applications & Products) is a large ERP multinational software corporation. It is an ERP software for managing data of major departments of any corporation.

When people in the industry refer to SAP they are referring to the GUI that accesses data from the back-end. This data from the back end is fetched & modified using SAP T-codes (Transaction Codes).
For example, one might say “ECC is used to execute T-codes” or “S/4 is used to execute T-Codes.”

What do SAP Consultants/Analysts do?

Let’s explain this by using an analogy of owning an airline company.
Let’s say you own an airline company, you can’t just buy or rent airplanes and call it a day. When you have an airplane you will need a team of consultants (or staff) to run & maintain the airplane. Think of piolets, mechanics, flight attendants, etc.

In the same way, when a massive fortune 500 corporation purchases SAP software to use in their business. They can’t just buy the software & call it a day. The corporation will need to hire consultants (or staff) to run & maintain the software.

Functional vs Technical vs Techno-Functional Consultants/Analysts.

There are generally 3 different types of consultants.

  • Functional Consultants
  • Technical Consultants
  • Techno-Functional Consultants.

Functional Consultants configure out of box settings & solutions from SAP Products & services.

Technical Consultants configure settings from the back-end in SAP usually through writing ABAP code.

Techno-Functional Consultants do both technical & functional work.
